Killing the Goose That Laid the Golden Egg
A corny title for an editorial perhaps, but unfortunately only too true when related to Australia’s current domestic aviation environment.
Airlines around the world are battling to survive the dual cancers of ever-increasing fuel prices coupled with inflation and a declining or stagnant market sector. Gone are the promising days of 1978 when deregulation and ticket counter queues were putting airlines into the black left right and centre. A recession and a doubling of fuel prices in less than eighteen months put paid to that revival.
Nowadays if a carrier can break even that is considered a feat, if a carrier should return two per cent nett on the invested dollar then it is considered nothing short of miraculous. Australia is no different than elsewhere. Despite very high load factors by world standards and a generally efficient operating record, our three major carriers – Ansett, T AA and Qantas – all battle to make the bottom line black.
