The right plane at the right time – that in one brief sentence is what makes· a commercial (read successful) aircraft program. There is certainly no arguing with this simple theory and it is a sad fact of aeronautical life that only one In three design approvals ever live to become viable aircraft projects.

One such success, in fact fast becoming the benchmark by which its many rivals are now compared, is the Brazilian Bandeirante.

Brazil, like Australia, is geographically a vast nation. We have 14 million people, they have more than 120 million, we have roughly $110 billion GNP, they have, twice that figure, we have a government that has traditionally shied away from vigorous Indigenous aircraft development while the Brazilian authorities recognised an opportunity back in the 60s that was simply too good to pass up.
