Operation Cenderawasih
One of the most difficult and complex survey operations undertaken by the Australian Defence Force – Operation Cenderawasih – is approaching its final stage.
Operation Cenderawasih, the survey and mapping of Irian Jaya, the western portion of the island of New Guinea, as a project under the Australian Defence co-operation program with Indonesia, has been carried out in the tropical “dry” season for the last two years, involving elements of the three Services.
Irian Jaya comprises some of the wildest country in the world, ranging from steamy swamps and dense jungles to snow-capped mountains, and much of the interior remains unexplored. Rainfalls of 5000 millimetres are common creating further hazards for aerial and ground work.
