Cairns ILS to be upgraded

Airservices Australia has announced that it will upgrade the instrument landing system (ILS) at Cairns Airport to increase its reliability.

The upgrade will cost $3 million and will be undertaken before the onset of the wet season. The works are expected to be done in such a way that disruption to air traffic at the airport will be minimised.

“This upgrade to the ILS will improve safety and ensure that extended and uncontrolled outages are kept to a minimum in future,” said Airservices general manager technology and asset services Alastair Hodgson.

The upgrade at Cairns is part of an ongoing program to gradually upgrade or replace ILSs around Australia to ensure continued service provision until 2025.
