Albury Airport has officially opened a new taxiway extension that it says will streamline operations.
The project, supported by $2.88 million from the Albanese Government’s Albury Wodonga Regional Projects initiative, extends the western Taxiway Alpha as part of its broader infrastructure strategy to “support growing aviation demand and enable long-term expansion opportunities”.

“The Albury Airport is a vital transport link for the region and these upgrades mean it can run more efficiently,” said Federal Minister for Regional Development, Local Government and Territories, Kristy McBain MP.
“The runway extension will help the airport to expand in line with demand and provide economic benefits and travel opportunities for Albury-Wodonga communities.”
The taxiway has been extended by approximately 300 metres, with works having commenced earlier this year and completed in April.
“The project forms part of the Albury Airport Master Plan 2018, which identified the Taxiway Alpha extension as a key priority to improve aircraft circulation and reduce delays caused by backtracking on the runway,” Albury City Council said last October.
“The works form part of the broader Albury Airport Western Precinct Expansion Project, which has received $5 million in Australian Government funding under a funding deed with the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development.”
The extended taxiway will reduce runway backtracking, enhance safety, and “provide critical access to the airport’s Western Precinct, a priority area identified for the future development of aviation services”, the federal government says.
Albury City Council Mayor Kevin Mack said the project “represents another important step in strengthening the region’s transport and economic infrastructure”.
“Albury Airport plays a critical role in connecting our region to major capital cities, supporting local business, tourism, emergency services and freight movement,” he said.
“This project positions the airport to support future growth and gives us greater capacity to respond to increasing aviation demand over the long term.
“We appreciate the Australian Government’s support through the Albury Wodonga Regional Projects initiative, which is helping deliver infrastructure that will benefit the broader region for years to come.”
The federal government also last year pledged $5 million for Albury City Council to deliver a full runway overlay to improve safety and strengthen the surface for larger aircraft to land at Albury Airport, which will support visitor levels and emergency services, particularly during bushfire season.
