The 12-seat aircraft, first unveiled in 2015, is designed for various missions, including search and rescue, law enforcement and high-intensive care patient transport.
A new domestic business lounge will be constructed in Adelaide, while the airport’s current Qantas Club and Chairman’s Lounge will be fully refurbished. The overhaul is part of a $100 million investment by Qantas in enhancing its lounges around the world.
Commencing 13 December, the route will operate three times per week using Jetstar’s 787-8 Dreamliner fleet, and is tipped to add 190,000 inbound seats to Queensland over three years. It will be the only non-stop service between the two cities, roughly halving travel time to eight hours.
Starting 14 August, the low-cost carrier will fly three times per week between Cairns and Denpasar, and is expected to add more than 28,000 international seats into Cairns within the first 12 months. Customers will be able to connect through Bali to other destinations in the AirAsia network.
The sold-out maiden flight, VA1681, touched down at Ayers Rock Airport at around 4pm local time on Thursday afternoon on board the 737-800 VH-YIA. Virgin is also commencing Brisbane–Uluru flights this week, with the first to take off on Friday.
The deal, which the ACCC signalled last month that it would allow, will let Virgin place its VA code on trans-Tasman Air New Zealand flights originating and sold in Australia, provided Air New Zealand sets the fares. The consumer watchdog says it believes this will offer passengers more choice.
