Only 1.8 per cent of flights were cancelled in October 2024, around half the rate of October 2023, as detailed in Airservices’ latest Australian Aviation Network Overview report for November, though on-time performance still lags the rest of the world.
Workers were due to take industrial action on Wednesday, but have won an in-principle agreement that will see an 11 per cent pay rise over two years as well as improvements to rostering and working conditions. Ninety-eight per cent of workers voted in favour of strikes in a ballot filed in October.
According to data released by Flight Centre’s Corporate Traveller division, corporate travel to regional Australia increased by 13 per cent year on year in the September 2024 quarter, with Mackay, Newcastle, Cairns, Townsville, and the Gold Coast among the top regional destinations.
A new campaign, which features disability rights campaigner Shane Hryhorec as well as support from Sophie Morgan of Rights on Flights, looks to raise awareness of “systemic issues in air travel that result in mistreatment, discrimination, and dangerous situations for disabled passengers”.
The planned industrial action, starting at 6am Wednesday, will affect ramp, cargo and baggage handling across Queensland, NSW, Victoria, South Australia and the Northern Territory, and comes after 98 per cent of workers voted in favour of strikes in a ballot filed in October.
The TWU said 98 per cent of workers supported the protected industrial action ballot, which was filed at the end of October, after knocking back the same proposed agreement from dnata twice by margins of 92 per cent and 94 per cent respectively.
