The flight paths, which will be subject to a formal planning and consultation period later this year, have been designed for WSI’s single initial runway. They include reciprocal runway operations (RRO), where planes arrive and depart from the same direction, to minimise noise at night when traffic permits.
The airport expects domestic figures to reach similar levels to last year – around 84 per cent of pre-COVID levels – and international passengers to climb 53 per cent over the 2022 winter holidays, driven in no small part by the New Zealand market.
More than 1.1 million people are expected to pass through Melbourne’s domestic terminals over the 17 days from Friday, as well as more than 500,000 international travellers. The airport expects the next three Fridays to be the busiest days, with around 105,000 passengers on each day.
Chinese passengers have recovered to 54 per cent of pre-pandemic levels in May, compared to only 22 per cent at the start of the year. Sydney’s international terminal saw 1,076,000 passengers over the month, while domestic traffic grew 5.5 per cent year-on-year to 1,934,000, or 87.3 per cent of May 2019.
Domestic passengers were up a modest seven per cent on May 2022, but international traffic doubled year-on-year. Last month saw 3,784 international flights, compared with 1,780 in May 2022, carrying 744,868 passengers – 87.6 per cent of the 2019 figure and 103 per cent of May 2022.
Supporters of the Brisbane Flight Path Community Alliance (BFPCA) rallied on Saturday to demand a 10pm-6am curfew at Brisbane Airport, as well as a cap on the total number of flights, similar to the arrangements at Sydney Airport.
