BITRE figures released by the Department of Transport on Friday show that the airport’s passenger numbers in March hit 159,000 – 65 per cent larger than the same month in pre-pandemic 2019.
Christine O’Reilly, who has held positions at organisations such as BHP, Stockland, Transurban and Infrastructure Victoria, will replace Peter Hay at APAC – owner of both Melbourne and Launceston Airports – as of 1 October. Hay has served as APAC chair for the last five years.
The NAIF loan to North Queensland Airports (NQA) will allow the first major refurbishment of Cairns’ international terminal in its approximately 30-year history, while Mackay Airport will upgrade its runway, taxiway and apron services and create a mixed retail and commercial precinct.
Work is already underway at St Marys to construct metro station facilities, while construction on the Orchard Hills, Luddenham and Bradfield stations will begin in coming months. The government aims to have the metro line operational by the time the airport opens in 2026, with an estimated travel time of 20 minutes between the St Marys and Aerotropolis stations.
Last Wednesday (29 May), a 38-year-old man was sentenced by the Downing Centre District Court in Sydney to three years and four months’ imprisonment, with a non-parole period of two years, after being identified over two years ago as a potential suspect of theft at Sydney Airport’s cargo facility.
Developed after consultation with both community and industry over the past year, the Noise Action Plan for Brisbane is open for community feedback until 14 July, with community engagement sessions to be held in Brisbane from 4–18 June.
