The airline has applied to the International Air Services Commission (IASC) to grant it 28 flights per week between Australia and Qatar using wet-leased 777-300ER aircraft from Qatar Airways, with tickets already on sale after receiving interim approval from the ACCC last year.
The changes, to be rolled out over the next 12 months, will see up to 1 million more Classic Reward seats go on sale through the Flying Kangaroo’s international partner airlines. They come after last year’s introduction of “Classic Plus” made more reward seats available.
The first flight of the seasonal Lunar New Year service touched down on Friday aboard the A330-300 B-LHG, with the route to operate four times per week until 15 February. According to Queensland Airports Limited, the route will deliver 5,000 seats into the Gold Coast over the next four weeks.
The carrier will operate A320-200 aircraft on the route from 20 March, starting at three times per week before increasing to four times per week from 12 April and daily from 1 June. In total, the service will add more than 127,000 seats between Perth and Bali per year.
The route, last attempted months before COVID-19 began, will be the only direct flight between the two destinations and will cut out an often-lengthy layover that can involve changing airports in Tokyo.
This year, 30 apprentices will enrol in the program, but the Flying Kangaroo plans to eventually grow that to 150 in a bid to alleviate an industry-wide talent crisis.
