The Flying Kangaroo currently travels via Singapore to the British capital and will soon fly via Auckland to New York. These could remain even after direct flights from Sydney launch in 2025.
It means the Flying Kangaroo will go head to head with Air New Zealand, which is starting its own 16-hour flight from the North Island on 17 September this year.
Chief executive Alan Joyce said the result takes the before tax impact of COVID on the wider group to $7 billion, but hailed the exceptional speed of the airline’s recovery.
The business’ results for FY22 saw revenue hit $319 million, including COVID grants of $32 million. This was, however, significantly lower than the 87 million in help it received in FY21.
The professional body made the recommendation as part of its new report on the problem, which also suggested a greater emphasis on recognising the benefits of women and migrant engineers.
