Perth Airport has tapped Western Sydney International Airport designer Woods Bagot to lead its terminal redevelopment project.
The Australian firm will head a “global consortium of architecture and design companies” to overhaul the terminals as part of Perth’s $5 billion capital works program, which is designed to bolster the airport’s role as a western gateway to Australia.

“It’s an ambitious project that will deliver new terminal and airfield facilities at Perth Airport with a footprint equivalent to almost 30 Optus Stadium playing fields,” airport chief executive Jason Waters said.
“The floor space in the terminal alone will be three times the size of the floor space of the Perth Convention centre. The new terminal facilities will reflect a modern, vibrant and dynamic Western Australia and will provide passengers a world-class experience.
“While acknowledging our past and reflecting our present, Perth’s New Terminal will be a bold statement of the confidence Western Australians have in the future of their State.”
According to Waters, the airport is aiming for “a smart terminal that operates efficiently and safely, and makes use of technology that improves the customer experience and operational efficiency”.
“With the passenger journey at the top of mind we will create a seamless and intuitive terminal experience for all passengers whether they are starting their journey, transferring or returning home,” he said.
“Its sustainable design and proven best-in-class technology will also drive new levels of efficiency for our airline partners.
“The new terminal infrastructure will include an expansion to the international terminal and a new domestic terminal all of which will seamlessly connect with the current Terminal 1 allowing passengers to cross between existing and new facilities.
“The New Terminal will support the growth of international services for our airline partners at Airport Central. It will also allow Qantas to realise its Western Hub vision, positioning Perth as its second most significant operational base after Sydney.”
Perth Airport last year showed off the vision for its “One Airport” program, which will consolidate all flights at the Airport Central precinct.
The fly-through animation shows the airport’s new parallel runway and terminal facilities, as well as other features including its first multi-storey carparks and airport hotel, to be built over the next 10 years in what is being dubbed the “one airport” program.
It came after the airport resolved a long-standing dispute with Qantas over the airline’s move to Airport Central.
Western Sydney Airport’s terminal, also designed by Woods Bagot, was formally unveiled last month, and major construction work was declared complete, with its opening still on track for later next year.
