Sydney will have a direct link to Egypt from next year with the announcement of a new EgyptAir service to Cairo via Singapore.
The new route, announced at the El Alamein Air Show, will give Sydney its first direct connection to Cairo, with onward connections across Egypt, Africa, Europe and the Middle East, and will mark Sydney’s 54th airline – a new record for the airport.

“This is a major milestone for our international network, delivering greater choice for passengers and unlocking new opportunities for tourism, trade and cultural links between Australia, Egypt and the broader region,” said Sydney Airport CEO Scott Charlton.
“Egypt is the largest unserved African market for Australian travellers, and a Sydney service by EgyptAir is a big step forward in improving connectivity between Australia and Egypt. We look forward to working with EgyptAir as it progresses its plans for Sydney.”
NSW is home to Australia’s largest Egyptian community, with more than 21,000 people. According to Captain Ahmed Adel, Chairman and CEO of EgyptAir, the service “represents a meaningful improvement in connectivity between Australia, Southeast Asia and Africa”.
“Partnering with Sydney Airport is an important step in growing EgyptAir’s international network and strengthening links between Egypt, Singapore and Australia,” he said.
“The new service will make travel between our regions easier and support growing demand for tourism, business, education and visiting friends and relatives.
“We look forward to welcoming passengers onboard and building stronger connections between Egypt and Sydney.”
It comes after a total of 9.96 million passengers travelled through Sydney’s terminals in Q2 2026, down 0.7 per cent on the same period in 2025, but half-yearly passenger traffic was up 1.5 per cent on 2025 levels, with growth in Asian routes helping offset the slump in Middle East demand.
“With more than 20.7 million passengers travelling through the airport in the first half of the year, demand remains ahead of 2025 levels and reinforces Sydney Airport’s role as Australia’s busiest international gateway,” said Charlton last month.
Guangzhou was the top international destination for growth in the quarter, up 50.5 per cent on last year, with Hong Kong and Kuala Lumpur both up by more than 14 per cent, and Singapore, Seoul and Tokyo all growing “strongly”.
Full details of the EgyptAir Cairo service, including schedules, ticket sales, and aircraft type, will be revealed closer to launch.
