Seeking to enhance regional security, RAAF personnel ensured naval awareness was at the forefront in monitoring one of the world’s busiest maritime trade routes, which sees nearly half of all global container traffic and two-thirds of oil shipments pass.

Focusing on collecting information on merchant and naval shipping activity in international waters, Chief of Joint Operations Vice Admiral Justin Jones said the missions demonstrated the importance of interoperable security partnerships.

“For more than 40 years, Operation Gateway has enabled Australia and Malaysia to make important contributions to the collective security of the Indo-Pacific,” he said.

“It is an example of Australia’s longstanding practice of maintaining a presence abroad and collaborating with others for the shared benefit of our region.

“Malaysia is one of Australia’s most important regional security partners and we share a commitment to a peaceful, secure and prosperous Indo-Pacific region.”

Operation Gateway was originally established as part of the wider Malaysia-Australia Joint Defence Program.
