“Today marks an exciting new chapter for Launceston Airport as we welcome Link Airways and celebrate a new non-stop connection to Canberra,” said Launceston Airport chief executive sisineadKatie Cooper.
“Whether it’s your first visit to Parliament House, your first glimpse of Cataract Gorge, or simply a long-overdue reunion, this new service opens the door to seamless two-way travel and invites more people to discover everything our region has to offer.
“Through a mix of seasonal and year-round services we now have direct connections to all mainland state capitals and the national capital, which puts our region within easy reach of millions of Australians.”
Jeff Boyd, manager of network strategy at Link Airways, said the new route “benefits business, government, and leisure travellers alike”.
“Through Link Airways’ codeshare partnership with Virgin Australia, it also establishes new, convenient connections for travellers, offering excellent connectivity because of Virgin Australia’s vast route network,” he said.
“Thanks to the Tasmanian Government’s Aviation Attraction Fund, in collaboration with Canberra and Launceston Airports, for helping to launch the service.”
Link Airways is now the fifth carrier serving Launceston, alongside QantasLink, Jetstar, Virgin Australia, and Sharp Airlines. The route comes as the airport begins a major overhaul of its domestic departure lounge as part of its terminal redevelopment program.
The project will see the construction of a new boarding gate, as well as a “complete renovation and modernisation” of Gates 3 and 4, and a 600-square-metre expansion of the gate area.
“The expansion is designed to provide passengers with more room, improved seating, better wayfinding and a significantly enhanced experience,” the airport said in a press release last month.
“The works represents another project in a series of upgrades to the airport’s departures experience, with enhancements to the check-in hall, security screening point and departures hall all completed across the last four years.”
Launceston also opened its new reinforced Taxiway Foxtrot in December.
