Launceston Airport has commenced works on a $12 million expansion of its departure gates.

Part of Launceston’s major terminal upgrade program, the project will see the construction of a new boarding gate, as well as a “complete renovation and modernisation” of Gates 3 and 4, and a 600-square-metre expansion of the gate area.

“The expansion is designed to provide passengers with more room, improved seating, better wayfinding and a significantly enhanced experience,” the airport said in a press release.

“The works represents another project in a series of upgrades to the airport’s departures experience, with enhancements to the check-in hall, security screening point and departures hall all completed across the last four years.”

According to Launceston Airport CEO Katie Cooper, the project is “a significant step in a truly transformative journey for Launceston Airport, that has completely reimagined the way passengers experience our terminal”.

“We’ve created a bespoke airport experience here at Launceston that reflects the character, beauty and identity of Tasmania, and gives travellers a genuine sense of place from the moment they arrive,” she said.

“From check-in through to boarding, passengers will now have a seamless, uniquely Tasmanian experience at Launceston Airport with local architecture, businesses and amazing airport views all showcased.

“By increasing capacity and improving the functionality of our departure gates, we’re creating the infrastructure needed to support more services and passengers which sets us and our region up for long term growth.

“We’re grateful to the Tasmanian Government and our airline partners for their ongoing collaboration and investment in Launceston Airport which enables us to not only meet today’s needs but unlock the next phase of growth for Launceston and Tasmania.”

Announced last February, the terminal expansion is set to add three new food and beverage outlets and increase passenger amenities.

“As part of the project, the Departure Hall’s footprint will be expanded to increase the leisure space for travelling passengers,” the airport said at the time.

“Three amenity blocks will undergo a complete refresh, and modern traveller conveniences such as fast Wi-Fi and charging points will be added in addition to more seating for passengers wanting to take in the airport’s spectacular views.”

It comes after the opening of the new reinforced Taxiway Foxtrot in December.
