International flights have returned to Avalon Airport for the first time since 2020 with the launch of a Jetstar service to Bali on Monday.

The inaugural JQ49 service to Denpasar took off from Avalon at 6:30pm on 23 March aboard A321neo LR VH-OFS, with five flights to operate per week. It comes ahead of the return of direct Avalon–Adelaide services on Thursday, as well as an expansion of Avalon–Brisbane capacity.

“This is Jetstar at its best, giving passengers more everyday low fares, more choice, more seats, and more ways that make travel possible for more Australians,” said Jetstar chief executive Stephanie Tully.

The Bali service will add more than 120,000 seats per year to the Avalon market, with seven weekly Adelaide flights to add up to 109,000 seats and five additional Brisbane flights to add up to 107,000 seats. Jetstar also serves Sydney and the Gold Coast from Avalon.

“Adding 330,000 seats a year out of Melbourne Avalon gives the region great value flights and with Bali now on the map, there has never been a better time to fly from Melbourne’s west,” Tully said.

“Bali has always captured the hearts of Australians and now it’s more accessible than ever for the Geelong region and beyond, and we thank Avalon Airport for their support.”

Avalon last year announced a suite of major upgrades ahead of the Bali launch, with a public bus service to nearby Lara train station also recently commencing.

One thousand new seats are being added across the airport’s international and domestic terminals, alongside runway lighting upgrades, new security equipment, CCTV, new control tower water connections, and an extra 500 parking spaces.

According to Avalon Airport CEO Ari Suss, Jetstar’s expansion would bring major economic benefits to the Geelong region.

“Today’s reopening of Avalon’s international passenger operations is about much more than just a flight to Bali,” he said.

“Backed by strong partnerships and investment and over 100 new jobs, this moment signals Avalon’s next phase as a growing aviation and economic gateway for the region.”

International services have not flown from Melbourne’s second major airport since the termination of a Citilink A320neo service to Denpasar and an AirAsia X A330 service to Kuala Lumpur due to the outbreak of COVID-19 in 2020.
