Jetstar will boost its seats between Melbourne to Hobart in the second half of the year.
Starting 1 July, Jetstar will introduce extra flights connecting the Victorian and Tasmanian capitals. While full details are still to be released, the low-cost carrier said it will bring around 50,000 additional seats to the route over the following six months.

“Jetstar is proud to be the leading carrier to and from Tasmania, and Hobart continues to be a cornerstone of our domestic network,” said its executive manager, customer, Jenn Armor.
“We’ve seen strong demand for travel between Hobart and Melbourne. These additional flights will give thousands more passengers the chance to enjoy low fares and seamless travel across the Bass Strait.”
The new services were enabled by the state government’s Aviation Attraction Fund. According to airport chief executive Norris Carter, Hobart is the “most popular gateway to Tasmania”, as around 60 per cent of travellers to the state arrive via the airport.
“Every year more than 2.8 million people touch down at Hobart Airport and more than 50 per cent of these travellers arrive from Melbourne,” he said.
“That’s why Hobart Airport has worked hard to secure this deal together with Jetstar, to add extra seats to the most popular route, on the state’s most popular airline.
“These seats are going to fill up fast with sky-high demand that is set to continue to grow, which is great news for Tasmania’s tourism and hospitality industries.
“The Hobart Airport team is proud to play such a crucial role in growing tourism and investing in it too, from our $200 million terminal expansion to the $130 million runway upgrade.”
Hobart’s runway upgrades are being carried out in three stages and will strengthen 829 metres of runway to accommodate larger jet aircraft.
Stage one will see the northern end of the runway upgraded, with stage two upgrading the middle and stage three the southern end. Works are expected to be completed this year.
The runway upgrade is part of Hobart Airport’s master plan, which also includes $200 million to overhaul its terminal.
The current terminal was designed for 1.5 million passengers per year and currently handles 2.6 million, with forecasts of 3.5 million by 2030. The upgrade, to be carried out by Hutchinson Builders, will see the terminal double in size, with works expected to be completed by early 2027.
