‘I Avoid The Word Stunt’: Matt Hall on his extraordinary career
Matt Hall is one of Australia’s best-known aerobatic performers and now teaches others how to think like a fighter pilot. Here, he talks to Jake Nelson at Avalon about his death-defying career.
Australian Aviation: Where did your interest in flying come from, and how did Matt Hall Racing get started?
Matt Hall: My grandad was a pilot in World War II. My dad is a general aviation pilot with a private pilot’s licence, and I grew up riding shotgun with him. I started gliding when I was 14, got my licence there when I was 15, and then just continued to fly anything and everything I could get my hands on for the right price. Because I was just a kid with no money, the only way I could actually afford to do a professional was to join the Air Force, which is what I did.
