Help us track down the last Australian Aviation issues!

written by Adam Thorn | December 5, 2023

In September 1977, Jim Thorn launched the first issue of what was then known as Australian Aviation & Defence Review.

Initially an annual, it was a labour of love that became one of the country’s longest-running and most influential magazines.

But perhaps the secret sauce to our success was our ability to continually embrace the future.

An extraordinary fact is that in the mid-nineties, we were one of the first consumer magazines – in the world – to launch a website.

Today, in 2023, we continue as a video podcast, online news site, major event and still a print magazine.

Now, though, we’re attempting to embrace the future by cataloguing our past.

Over the last year, our team has been quietly attempting to digitise every single issue – providing a unique look into the history of our industry.

We’ve already put more than 100 magazines live and hope to complete the set next year. But to do so, we need your help.

When this brand’s owner, Momentum Media, bought the magazine in 2020, we received boxes and boxes of magazines, and we’ve been buying up past issues to complete the set.

But we’re still missing hard copies of a handful – including issue #1.

If you can help us, please email [email protected]. The issues we need are: 1, 3, 5, 8, 9, 12, 21, 347

If you want to learn more about our storied history, then read this riveting account of the early days from our founder, Jim Thorn, first published in 2007 to mark our 30th anniversary.

We also recently published pieces to mark the lives of two of our greatest-ever contributors, Gordon Reid and Eric Allen.

Finally, our premium content subscribers can take a look at our archive to see our – work in progress! – archive of issues.
