written by Jake Nelson | June 26, 2023

Jetstar has brought back its seasonal Cairns–Newcastle service for the third straight year.

The low-cost carrier will fly three times per week between Cairns and Newcastle using Airbus A320 aircraft, translating to around 4,400 seats on the route per month until 28 October. The first flight, JQ894, touched down in Newcastle at 3:08pm on Saturday on board VH-VQF.

Flights will operate on Monday, Thursday and Saturday, flying to Newcastle shortly after noon before returning to Cairns at around 3:30pm. Demand is already high, said Jetstar’s chief customer officer, Alan McIntyre.

“We’ve seen thousands of bookings already in both directions and many flights are close to fully booked, especially in the first couple of weeks of the four-month service,” he said.

“We thank Cairns Airport and Newcastle Airport for their support of the route.”

Dr Peter Cock, CEO of Newcastle Airport, expressed his confidence that the seasonal route will be successful in its third year.

“People from our region love Tropical North Queensland, and the direct service between Newcastle and Cairns makes it easier than ever to get there,” said Dr Cock.

“Demand for travel in both directions is incredibly strong and with the continued support of our region we hope the Newcastle to Cairns service will extend beyond October 2023 to a year-round service.”
