Podcast: How to fix our engineering talent shortage

written by Robyn Tongol | October 20, 2022

Our aviation industry has been long grappling with a chronic lack of engineering talent — with COVID-19 exacerbating the problem.

On this week’s episode, Adam Thorn talks to the RAAA, which last week released a report identifying the causes behind our shortages and what we can do to fix them.

Report author Sheridan Austin and the RAAA’s CEO Steve Campbell discuss why businesses must invest in hiring more apprentices and why rules on transferring qualifications from abroad need to be modernised.

Finally, they examine what can be done to encourage more women into the profession and how long-term aviation stereotypes can be challenged.

I’ve worked with Sheridan before and it’s great to see someone so passionate about the industry representing this issue.

I agree with most of the points raised in the report but I do have a couple of comments. The diploma isn’t any harder academically than CASA basics. It just seemed that way because people were getting wise to the kinds of questions they were going to get in those old exams. Everyone knew a mate that had sat the exam recently so they asked them for the good oil. This is why we have so many people that troubleshoot by changing random boxes until it works. We were always meant to have academic aptitude first, hand-skills second so this sort of fault finding didn’t happen. You can get through the diploma if you apply yourself and/or have a decent instructor. My cohort of students have averaged 84% in 2022 and some of the best ones are located in remote places like Broome and Kununurra.
