Skytrax has named Qantas the fifth-best airline in the world and the best in APAC in its annual awards, in a huge show of faith in the national carrier.

The Flying Kangaroo moved up from last year’s position of eighth, while Virgin dropped from 34th to 43rd and Jetstar from 56th to 57th.

It comes despite recent data showing Australian carriers they are among the global airlines with the current highest cancellation rates.

It also comes as Qantas has suffered a year to forget in 2022, facing a string of problems including huge delays at Easter, hours-long call wait times, and even a revelation that the cabin crew of a Qantas A330 were made to sleep across seats in economy.

However, the Skytrax World Airline Awards — considered the Oscars of global aviation — also named Qantas as having the best business class, best economy class, and best cabin hygiene.

Overall, Qatar Airways was named the world’s best airlines, with Singapore ranked second place and Emirates third place.

Qatar has now taken the top title seven years in a row, and its airport won the equivalent award earlier this year despite recent controversy.

In October 2020, women from as many as 10 flights out of Doha’s Hamad International Airport were told to leave their aircraft before being escorted to ambulances for a non-consensual genital check, supposedly carried out as staff tried to find the mother of a baby abandoned at the airport.

The decision to re-award the prestige title to Hamad came despite Human Rights Watch telling Australian Aviation the previous win in 2021 was “ridiculous”.

The state of Qatar effectively owns both Hamad Airport and the flag carrier, Qatar Airways.

The top 10 airlines, as decided by Skytrax:

Qatar Airways

Singapore Airlines

Emirates

ANA AII Nippon Airways

Qantas Airways

Japan Airlines

Turkish Airlines

Air France

Korean Air

Swiss International Air Lines
