Women in Command
Wellcamp Airport’s International Women’s Day event hoped to foster a love of aviation in a new generation of young women. Hannah Dowling reports

Around the globe, 8 March each year represents International Women’s Day. The day commemorates the work that women throughout history have put in to achieve an equal standing with men in socio-economical, political and cultural settings. While we have seen many Australian women pioneering the place of a woman in the cockpit since as early as the 1920s, there remains work to be done on the ongoing underrepresentation of women in the industry as a whole.
As such, in celebration of International Women’s Day, Toowoomba Wellcamp Airport, in conjunction with the Wellcamp-based Qantas Group Pilot Academy, opened its doors to welcome in the next generation of women in aviation – and Australian Aviation was lucky enough to be invited along for the day.
