Partnership key to future of regional aviation
Developing a dedicated regional aviation policy statement
The Federal Government’s recent announcement that it will work with industry to develop a dedicated regional aviation policy statement recognises the importance of affordable and sustainable air services in our regions.
But it is also recognition that the challenges facing regional aviation in Australia are complex.

When the AAA launched its Protect Regional Airports campaign in 2017, we heard from many regional airport operators of the difficulties they face in their efforts to meet the needs of their communities as the costs of compliance continue to rise.
Residents have also spoken out at two recent regional airfares inquiries, highlighting the challenges of reaching their local capital cities for medical appointments, family events or boarding school when the cost of regional air services can at times be prohibitive.
What is clear is there is no simple fix for the very unique challenges faced in our regions, but finding the right solutions is more important than ever.
The development of the policy statement will provide an opportunity for industry to work together on long-term solutions that will make a difference for people living and working beyond our city centres.
The Government has rightly recognised the importance of aviation in building regional economies and communities in announcing its intention to develop the policy statement.
But we will need sincere and constructive engagement with all parts of the industry if we are to create a sustainable aviation network that can support regional development and growth in the future.
The AAA has long campaigned for sustainable funding for regional airports and welcomed the announcement of the Government’s $100 million regional airport fund earlier this year.
It was much-deserved recognition of the fact that regional airports continue to be the lifeblood of their communities.
But this is just one step towards a sustainable regional aviation network that will serve local communities for years to come.
The senate committee report on regional air services released earlier this year found the issues are complex – and real solutions require a deeper look into how airfares are determined.
Any policy statement must consider measures to address high regional airfares and the impact airline pricing decisions have on families, businesses and communities in the regions.
Just as the airport industry stands ready to engage on the policy development process openly and constructively, we look forward to the domestic airlines that serve our regions doing the same.
‘Regional airports continue to be the lifeblood of their communities’
