For those in Australia, Father’s Day is quickly approaching and to celebrate, we’re rolling out a series of podcasts to hear how some very special dads have influenced their sons and daughters in the aviation world!

We share Peter’s stories growing up with his father John Weekes, an airline pilot with a career spanning TAA, Asiana Airways, Lauda Air and Singapore Airlines, from F27’s to the Boeing 777.

Peter’s brother David Weekes is also a Boeing 737 Captain with Virgin Australia, which is a testament to aviation running deep in their veins.

Father’s Day Series Ep 2 – Steve & Bernadette Wallace

In this podcast, we’re chatting to Steve Wallace and his daughter Bernadette.

The phrase “the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree” couldn’t be truer for this duo, with Steve nurturing his daughter’s love for aviation from a very young age.
Dinner time was never dull in the Wallace household. With Steve lining up cutlery to create runways and using salt and pepper shakers as aircraft, you can imagine his storytelling was quite a hit with the kids.

Bernadette’s earliest memory of aviation stems from her experience in the co-pilot seat, while her father worked alongside Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF) servicing Indigenous communities in Arnhem Land. From bringing passengers in for appointments to shopping trips, every day was different for Bernadette and her father.

Now a senior base pilot at the Royal Flying Doctor Service‘s Brisbane Base, Steve’s daily schedule still remains a surprise each day he clocks into work.
With Bernadette’s grandfather also having a background in the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF), and an uncle who owned his own aircraft, naturally, Bernadette has been drawn to aviation.

After completing her Bachelor of Aviation in February, Bernadette is looking to fly high with her upcoming career working at a local flight school.

Take a listen to find out more about how Bernadette finds her wings and how Steve found his!

Father’s Day Series Ep3 – Clarence And Colin Schofield

Coming to the final instalment of our Father’s Day Podcast, we have a very special father and son duo on the show.

We often have the pleasure of interviewing pilots or students on the podcast. This time, we delve into what it’s like to work on the ground and in the tower.

Both serving incredibly important roles towards the everyday operations of our industry, Clarence Schofield, and his father Colin, share a mutual love for aviation and an Aussie ‘can-do’ spirit.

Now retired, Colin shares his stories on what it was like working for Qantas as a Tug Driver, as he led aircraft to and from terminals and maintenance areas.

It comes to no surprise that Colin’s role sparked an interest at an early age for his son. Clarence now works as a Tower Controller in Brisbane, and he shares his fondest memories of spotting aircraft and seeing firsthand what it took to keep the industry moving.

Lessons From A Fighter Pilot With Kerwin Rae

We would love for you to get acquainted with Australian Aviation’s very own boss – Christian Boucousis, callsign ‘Boo’.

Usually you’ll find Boo in front of the camera, behind the mic as our podcast host or thinking about our next Good Kit article.

This time, he had the pleasure to sit down as a guest, speaking to Kerwin Rae about his very own experiences with business and aviation.

Since late 2017, Boo has been the managing director of Australian Aviation, adding a fresh, entrepreneurial flavour to the publication. For many years prior, he had the privilege of living out his Top Gun dream, starting off his career serving as a Fighter Pilot for the RAAF.

Utilising the fighter pilot methodology, or FLEX method as it’s known, Boo spends his spare time sharing his knowledge on how to think, plan and achieve with military precision.

The sky would be the limit for most, but as an avid flyer and ex-fighter pilot, Boo is continuously reaching for the stars in every aspect of his professional life.

There are many things that Kerwin Rae and Boo have in common, but the most obvious one is knowing how to succeed. Both being a testament of their own foolproof methodology, they have the ability to face their fears, think outside the box and transform their goals into realities.

For those who are wanting to learn the habits of great leadership, or needing a moment to reset, debrief and plan, take a listen to this very special podcast.

Boo, the face of Afterburner Australia.
