Managing fuel is a critical to a safe flight
Fuel. The stuff that an aero engine needs to keep turning and to keep your aircraft in the air. The trouble is that both here in Australia and in the US at least one aircraft a week runs out of fuel in the air, and those are only the ones that the regulators get to hear about!
In recent times CASA has been pushing the aspect of having the tanks dipped both before and after flight in order to check the fuel available and the fuel used. That is then matched with a recorded fuel burn. Remember that fuel gauges in light aircraft are only reliable when they read zero.
