Flight in the Age of Selfies

There’s no ‘I’ in passenger

I recently climbed a mountain. Well, really it was just a very big hill with a carved path, stairways and handrails. However, like a mountain, it boasted spectacular views from the peak from the land to the sea. As one would rightly expect, such breathtaking scenery often positions the viewer very close to a sheer drop, complete with jagged rocks and crashing waves hundreds of feet below.

In the interests of safety and logic the area was fenced, but not so as to obscure the view. A series of signs warned people of erosion in the area and the danger associated with getting any closer the precipice. Even so, one after the other, people clambered over the fence and walked backwards towards the cliff’s edge to get that perfect ‘selfie’. One couple even lifted their child over, who promptly ran towards the drop when their hat blew off. The entire scene beggared belief.
