New economy seatmakers flood the interiors market
2016 is proving to be the year that new economy seatmakers broke through the B/E Aerospace/Zodiac/Recaro domination of the market and secured massive orders.
AirAsia is taking over 70,000 seats from Mirus Aircraft Seats – “312 ship sets and counting” said the decal on the tiny British seatmaker’s stand at the Aircraft Interiors Expo in April. With nearly 200 aircraft in the existing fleet and over 300 on order, it’s a colossal coup for Mirus, which has come out of the blue in rural Norfolk. (Imagine if Jetstar announced all its future seats for all Jetstar brands would come from a hitherto unknown company from Wagga Wagga. ) The seat itself is barebones yet sturdy, with few moving parts and a focus on durability – precisely what AirAsia needs.
