Getting a senior doctor with trauma experience, a paramedic and equipment to the scene rapidly can make a significant difference to the outcome of patients with severe injury.

Once the world’s fastest-responding helicopter emergency medical service (HEMS), Sydney-based CareFlight continues to deliver its medical teams to the side of a critically injured patient anywhere within the greater Sydney basin, on average, in just 18 minutes from the moment a triple zero emergency call is made.

Such a rapid response is no mean feat given the complexity of Sydney’s busy civil and military airspace, congested road network and the expanding suburban topography from the city’s growing population – which has now reached over five million.
