Over 50 years the jet has had a profound effect on Australia’s domestic airlines

In 1965 when domestic pure jet service in Australia was a few months old, a year’s salary would have purchased nine return flights across the country – today that number is almost 200! Such is the dramatic advance in efficiency jet travel has brought to Australia and of course the world.

While history shows that the first jets were Boeing 727-100s, less is known about the false start in the late 1950s with the Sud Caravelle and possibly the Convair 880.
