At the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Cabin Safety Conference in late May, member airlines reported a 2013 spike in incidents involving disruptive passengers, up to 8,217 from a 2012 baseline of 5,220.
While the airlines reported that the majority of incidents are verbal, nearly 40 per cent of carriers reported that the incident was so severe as to require a flight to be diverted, costing tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars each time.
