Aircraft types on the VH register
The 2013 Australian aircraft census has again shown an upward trend in the number of powered aircraft registered with CASA, as it has done most years, with the exception of 2002, since our first compilation in 1997.
Larger types new to this year’s census include the Beech 100 King Air, Bell 427, Falcon 7X, Grumman G-111 Albatross, Gulfstream G-150, Kaman K-Max and Found E350 whilst amateur built types include the Cielo Lobo, Grigsor RG-8, Sopwith Snipe Replica and Vidor Whiskey. All these types have been detailed in the Register Review column over the past twelve months

Of the airliner numbers the Boeing 737 leads the way but the past year has also shown increased numbers of Airbus A320s, A330s and Fokker 100s arriving in Australia. ATR-72 numbers have increased by 50% mainly due to the arrival of four for Virgin/Skywest.
Stronger sellers of the newer types have been the Cirrus SR22T with seven units arriving during 2012/13 and the Zlin Savage Cub with three.
The most popular aircraft in Australia is the Cessna 172 with more than 1000 aircraft registered, however, the number of products from the big three, Cessna, Beech and Piper have remained fairly constant. The Diamond DA-40 has recorded the largest increase in numbers with 45 units compared with 27 last year. Vans, the biggest selling amateur built aircraft in the world, has continued to increase its market share in Australia with the RV-7, RV-7A, RV-9A, RV-10 and RV-12 all selling well, along with the relatively new to Australia Sonex which now has 13 units flying.
The most popular helicopter is the Robinson R22 Beta with more than 350 listed. The Robinson R44, Bell JetRanger and LongRanger continue to be favourites and whilst the Robinson R66 is relatively new to the marketplace its numbers have more than doubled from nine to 21 during the last year. The Agusta A109 and Eurocopter EC225 Super Puma have also increased their numbers substantially over the last twelve months.
Not surprisingly Kavanagh have just about the hot air balloon market to themselves whilst the most numerous antique aircraft is the Tiger Moth with over 200 aircraft still registered in the country.
