Is a new runway the only option?
The latest on-time performance (OTP) statistics confirm criticisms that Brisbane Airport – ranked 35th for OTP nationally – can’t handle existing traffic levels, a fact worsened by the recent six-month closure of the 14/32 runway.
Contributing to this have been large increases in regional scheduled and fly-in/fly-out traffic, highly dispersed population centres, continued intra- and interstate growth and increased international traffic. Three new large tourist resorts will open along the coast inside five years generating yet more flights.
