Backt to the future as jets offer hub bypass options
The amazing growth at key regional ports, the boom in fly-in/fly-out (FIFO) activity and a forecast doubling of passengers in the next two decades has set off an unprecedented hub-busting drive, last seen in the 1980-90s, but now with far more suitable aircraft available.
Hub-busting links using bigger and faster aircraft and direct international services are now seen as “must haves”. Regional aspirations for international services, revolving around A320s and 737-700/800s, have been given hope by the success of Air New Zealand’s trials of direct Auckland-Sunshine Coast flights, which now look likely to become permanent. Domestically, typical aspirations include nonstop Port Macquarie-Melbourne services.
