Register Review

Three new types are shown in the New Allocations this issue with everything from the ADF’s latest transport helicopter to a flying car.

Australian Aerospace has registered an MRH 90 (NH90) tactical transport helicopter, BCR. The civil registration enables Australian Aerospace to undertake flight testing of an avionics and software upgrade to the aircraft prior to delivery to the ADF.

The type has had problems with engine and transmission failures as well as floor panels not up to standard and poor spares availability, and as a consequence only around a dozen of the 46 units on order have been delivered. The Eurocopter-built, twin-engine, multirole helicopter first flew during December 1995 and since then 14 countries have ordered different versions of the helicopter including Australia and New Zealand.

The Australian government originally ordered 12 NH90s in 2005 to replace the ageing Army Iroquois and the order was increased to 46 when the ADF decided also to replace its Black Hawks and Sea Kings with the NH90, which is named MRH 90 in Australian service. The first four aircraft were manufactured by Eurocopter at Marignane, France, with the remaining 42 being assembled by Australian Aerospace at its Brisbane Airport facility.

A flying car (BFO) is not a new concept, indeed, several have been designed and flown over the years – mostly in the US. The main difference between previous designs and the I-TEC Maverick is that most others have had a solid wing whereas the Maverick has a sail wing making it more like a hang glider or trike. The twoseat body looks like an elderly Ford hot rod and includes lights, indicators and steering wheel for road use. The 190hp (142kW) injected 2. 5 litre Subaru engine drives a large pusher propeller while airborne and the rear wheels when on the ground. A 160km/h road speed and 60km/h air speed are claimed along with a 300ft takeoff and landing distance.

The Maverick is the result of six years’ research by the Indigenous Peoples’ Technology and Education Centre (ITEC) and has been primarily designed for missionary work in remote areas, but obviously the potential for other tasks as well as recreational flying is enormous.

The third new type is Mathew Wreford’s Cielo Lobo homebuilt XWV. Mathew obtained the aircraft during 2010 after it sat in a shed uncompleted for 10 years. He first registered it on the RA-Aus register as 19-7577 and began a complete rebuild replacing the engine, recovering the metal tube fuselage, fabricating a new instrument panel and finishing it in an attractive red and white colour scheme.

The aircraft is a high-wing, single-engine, taildragger with two side-by-side seats, and although Cielo Lobo is Spanish for Sky Wolf the aircraft looks remarkably like a Skyfox.

Royston Ferris has registered another of his SIAI Marchetti S211s CQJ. Of the 20 Republic of Singapore Air Force S211s that Royston obtained some time ago five remain stored at Jandakot awaiting onward sale, three are destined for the US with a further three already gone (see deletions), four have been sold in Italy with two of these already delivered, three have been sold locally, and two are still registered to Royston but are believed to have already been sold. ww Only one aircraft has Returned to the Register this issue and this only appears to be a paper exercise as the Cessna Aerobat JBV was only cancelled the day before.

There are 22 entries in the Deletions section this issue with more than half of these exported. The favoured destination this month is the US with the late Murray Griffiths’ CAC Wirraway BFO heading across the Pacific along with another one of Royston Ferris’ SIAI Marchetti S211s CHK. Boeing 737 JWL is now flying as N737WF with the Wells Fargo Bank after only 18 months on the local register, and Qantas 737 TJH in now marked as N120BT with the Bank of Utah. The middleaged 737 is reportedly going to be converted to a freighter.

Virgin Boeing 737s VBL and VBO have been exported at the end of their lease periods with VBL becoming N381LF with the International Lease Finance Corporation and VBO now N286CS before going to Sweden as SE-REX. Also in the US is McDonnell Douglas 500E MDE which is now flying as N109LB with Vetrol Systems of Portland, Oregon.

Four aircraft have been withdrawn from use for various reasons including Qantas Boeing 747 OJG which has been stored at Marana, USA since August and now looks likely to be broken up and used for parts.

Also destined for parts retrieval is Piper Cheyenne III WCE which was broken up at Essendon during July with useful parts going by truck to Aviation Salvage at Bankstown.

Four aircraft have crossed the Tasman and are now resident in New Zealand including amateur- built Rotorway Exec helicopter YHC which has become ZK-YHC with Ivan Deaker at Oamaru. Cessna Stationair TIB is now on skydiving duties at Paihia with Skydive Zone (Bay of Islands) marked as ZK-SKZ and Robinson R44 Raven HQT is now flying as ZK-ICP with North Shore Helicopters at Albany. Robinson R66 turbine EWK has been sold to RJ and JD Griffiths at Westport and is now ZK-HCE after only three weeks on the CASA register (see new allocations this issue).

Following up on Robinson R44 Raven ZTZ, which was shown in last month’s deletions, it is now known that it has become ZK-IKH with Kitto Helicopters at Balclutha, NZ.
