Technological top guns
The vice-chief of the Australian Defence Force, Air Marshal Mark Binskin, recently stated that Australia’s time as the military ‘top gun’ in Southeast Asia and the Western Pacific was in danger of coming to an end. According to the RAAF (and former RAN) fighter pilot, Australia’s high-technology defence capabilities are at risk of being superseded because of modernisation programs within the region.
Air Marshal Binskin’s assessment received some attention in the media, but a considered response from the government was noticeably absent. Given the central role played by technology in Australian defence policy, voters were entitled to some answers.
