Register Review

No new types are shown in the New Allocations this issue, but there are still some interesting aircraft including a Cessna Conquest, a Piper Cheyenne and two Extra aerobatic aircraft.

During the 1980s the Swiss Aero Club decided Europe needed a top class aerobatic aircraft to complete with the Russian Sukhoi Su-26 and Yakovlev Yak-55 which had begun to dominate world aerobatics. The club contacted Walter Extra who then designed the Extra EA230 based on the Stephens Akro but with a highly technical wing along with other minor modifications. The aircraft was a single-seat, tail dragging, mid-wing design made of steel tube and fabric with a wooden wing and powered by a 230hp (172kW) Lycoming engine.

The first flight of the prototype took place on July 14 1983 with Extra building a further 15 production EA230s at Dinslaken, Germany. Immediately after production of the EA230 started Extra began work on a larger model incorporating two seats in tandem, a composite wing and using a 300hp (225kW) Lycoming power plant. The two-seater was named the EA300 and a single seat version of the same aircraft was known as the EA300S.

Almost 200 of the EA300 and EA300S were built before Extra released the EA300L, which was a combination of the 300 and 300S designs incorporating a two-seat cockpit, slightly lower mid-wing layout and 300hp (225kW) engine.

During 1995 Extra added an entry-level model to its range with the EA200 two-seater which is fitted with a 200hp (150kW) engine and a lighter airframe. Extra aircraft have always serviced a very small market and during 2003 Extra was in danger of becoming bankrupt. However, an American investor was found and production was moved to Lancaster, Pennsylvania while research and development remained in Germany.

Performance Aviation’s Extra LXV is a 330LX model fitted with a 330hp (245kW) Lycoming engine and featuring a strengthened airframe, enlarged ailerons, elevator and rudder and two-seat cockpit, while Bill Watertons’ WFX is a 300L model.

There have been 15 Extras registered in Australia, including the two new ones, since the first two arrived together during 1992 with 12 of these still flying.

One is registered in New Zealand.

There have been seven Piper Cheyenne IIs registered in Australia but Aerolite Quarries’ PKJ is the first of its type to be seen in Australian skies since TNP crashed near Benalla during July 2004. Piper entered the eight-seat cabin-class market in 1966 with the Navajo and later the stretched Navajo Chieftain.

During 1968 the PA-31P Pressurised Navajo was released and in 1974 the PA‑31T Cheyenne was introduced to compete with the Beech Super King Air. Four years later Piper released a lower-powered version of the Cheyenne named the Cheyenne I and powered by two 500shp (375kW) PT6A turboprops instead of the 620shp (460kW) powerplants fitted to the original. The higher-powered version remained in production and was renamed Cheyenne II and it is this model that Aerolite Quarries has imported.

Cessna’s answer to the Beech Super King Air and Piper Cheyenne was the 441 Conquest which first flew during 1975.

It was a scaled-up 421 Golden Eagle with a pressurised cabin and two 635shp (475kW) Garrett TPE331 turboprop engines.

This led Piper to develop the 425 Corsair which used the smaller 421 airframe fitted with PT6A turboprops. Production of the 425 started in 1981 and ended during 1986 after 236 aircraft had been built. During its lifespan the model was renamed Conquest I with the 441 being the Conquest II. Henty Aviation’s BSM is a 1986 model and is the third last Conquest I to be built. There have been nine Corsair/Conquest Is registered in Australia with BSM being the only one still flying locally with one other in New Zealand.

Two aircraft are listed as Returning to the Register this month, Jetstream OTP and Bell 47G PTL. The IAP Group’s Jetstream OTP has been leased to Mid Sea Express in the Philippines as RP-C863 since December last year but returned to the company’s base at Bankstown via Ambon, Darwin and Longreach in September.

However, it did not stay long as it was leased to a New Zealand airline a few days later and delivered via the Gold Coast and Norfolk Island so it is expected to appear again in next issue’s deletions as being exported to New Zealand.

Bell 47G PTL was delivered new to Helicopter Transport at Lae, PNG as FJP way back in September 1967. When PNG was allocated its own international registration prefix during 1975 it simply became P2-FJP but was back is Australia as FJP in March 1976. It was refurbished by AMT Helicopters at Caboolture during 2007, sold to Syd Williams and took up the more appropriate markings of SID. It became PTL two years later and changed again to YTL only two months ago. After a very short time as YTL it has now changed back to PTL.

The Deletions section this issue contains the usual swag of reregistrations and aircraft transferring to the RA-Aus register, which of course means that they will still be active in Australian skies, as well as a couple, KFG and NJT, shown as being withdraw from use. The Beech King Air KFG is likely to find its way back onto the local register or be exported but Avro RJ70 NJT has reached the end of its useful life. It is an early -100 series aircraft built during 1993 and has been broken up at Adelaide after useful parts had been salvaged.

Of the exports four have gone to New Zealand including Beech Super King Airs NZE and NZF which are both shown as taking up ZK-DHP markings. This is not an error BLUE NO MORE Ex Virgin Australia/Blue 737-800 VH-VOD is now HL8261 with South Korea’s Jeju Air. (TK) as NZF became ZK-DHP for one day before changing to ZK‑PHP and two weeks later NZE became ZK-DHP the second. The two aircraft are destined for the RNZAF and were registered in Australia while Hawker Pacific attended to some pre-delivery work. Now registered in New Zealand to Hawker Pacific NZ they will soon be transferred to the RNZAF with NZF/ZK‑PHP to become NZ7124.

Two Robinson helicopters have also gone to New Zealand, 2003 model R44 Raven ZTZ and brand new R66 YRH. The R66 was only on the local register for one week before going to New Zealand and is now flying as ZK-IOA with Outgrow Aviation at Dannevirke.

Two more Virgin Australia Boeing 737s have departed at the end of their leases, VBP to Denmark and VOD to Korea, and RFDS Beech Super King Air FDO is now in the US with Dodson International Parts at Rantoul, Kansas and registered as N478GD. The Super King Air came to Australia during 1995 but had seen service in the US and Germany prior to that, and as Dodson specialise in parting out aircraft the machine may have come to the end of its flying career.

Four aircraft have been deregistered due to accident damage with the pilot of Robinson R22 STK seriously injured after the helicopter crashed while mustering near Miranda Downs, Queensland. Unfortunately the crash of Cessna 182Q CWQ proved fatal after the aircraft went missing on a flight from Walgett to Mudgee, NSW. The wreck of the Skylane was later found completely destroyed on the western side of the Warrumbungle Range.

Catching up on some recent exports, Strategic Airlines/Air Australia Airbus A330 SSA, which was shown in the August deletions, was sold to Swiss International Air Lines and was to be registered as HB‑IQR but ended up on the Isle of Man register as M-ABFL, while the two Pel-Air Metro 23s KAN and KDO have become C-GSNP and C-GSOQ respectively with Blas Holdings at Thunder Bay, Ontario, but operated by Bearskin Lake Air Service. In the US SIAI Marchetti S211 BZV is now N123VV and Canadian-built Harvard ZRO is now marked as N700JR.

The ex Republic of Singapore Air Force SIAI Marchetti is operated by Pottco Tactical Air at Council Bluffs, Iowa, while the Harvard is owned by JR Consulting of Midland, Texas.

The Harvard has been modified to look like a Japanese Zero WW2 fighter.
