Brisbane Airport has officially opened its $350 million terminal upgrade, including a nine story car park that opened in January. (Brisbane Airport)

A visit by Federal Transport Minister Anthony Albanese has prompted Brisbane Airport to declare its $350 million domestic terminal upgrade officially open — though the largest part of the upgrade opened in January and other parts are still under construction.

The upgrade includes a nine story car park billed as the largest in the southern hemisphere when it opened at the beginning of the year, an elevated walkway linking car park and terminal, and an expansion of the central area terminal that is home to Jetstar and Tiger Airways. The work also included an expansion of the northern terminal apron, a reconfiguration of the road network in front of the terminal and the construction of a new forecourt area and central taxi rank.

A new passenger pick-up car park that will offer 20 minutes of free parking to drivers waiting for arriving passengers is still under construction and is scheduled to open in mid-September.

The current pick-up and drop-off zone in front of the terminal will be reserved for drop-offs, though drivers picking up passenger with mobility problems can still use the drop-off zone. The new pick-up car park is an estimated seven to 15 minute walk from the terminal.

Following his visit, Mr. Albanese said he was most impressed with the nine-story piece of “kinetic art” gracing one side of the car park.

“The terminal upgrade will ensure that the Sunshine State continues to reap the social and economic benefits that come with the huge increase in air travel,” he added.

SYD airport is a debarkle and should be ashamed of itself for being a major gateway to this country, great to see the BNE is learning from a previous privatisation mess…good on ya BACL!
