The slow bake
The genesis of an airline grounding
The so-called slow bake of Qantas started in earnest in February with the airline dismissing a claim from the Australian and International Pilots Association (AIPA) that Qantas flightdeck crew job security is imperiled as “completely unfounded”, while warning that the pilots’ wage requests are not viable.
Qantas countered the initial parlay saying that the airline had “not made a pilot redundant in almost 40 years and there was no threat to the job security of our pilots. ” A key sticking point from the outset was an AIPA demand that Jetstar crews were to be paid the same rate as Qantas pilots if the parent airline code-shared on a Jetstar flight.
