First Australian ‘Boneyard’ lands in Alice Springs

written by australianaviation.com.au | May 27, 2011

Alice Springs Airport (ASA) will soon be home to the world’s first dedicated aircraft storage facility outside of the United States, after an agreement for the construction and operation of the facility was finalised with a storage company earlier this week.

Asia Pacific Aircraft Storage Pty Ltd (APAS) will oversee the day-to-day running of the new ‘boneyard’, with the company to work in conjunction with GHD on the design, engineering and construction of the 110Ha facility, to be built opposite ASA’s main terminal.

“The creation of our facility is an extremely exciting step for aviation in Australia,”APAS managing director, Tom Vincent said in a statement.

“This project represents the first Asia-Pacific based alternative for customers with aircraft based, or operating through, the region. Whilst aircraft operators/owners have historically ferried aircraft to the west coast of the United States, APAS will now provide a local alternative, thereby delivering significant fleet efficiencies and costs savings.”

Offering short, medium and long term storage of aircraft, APAS will also provide services for aircraft recycling and decommissioning, with Alice Springs providing the perfect dry, arid environment for the facility. APAS will now begin discussions with various airlines and aircraft leasing companies to promote the potential benefits of the storage centre.
