A very interesting cross section of aircraft can be found in the New Allocations this month, covering airliners to homebuilts and gliders as well as bizjets to helicopters and hot air balloons.

Starting at the heavy end, EBQ is Jetstar’s eighth Airbus A330-200 and ZPR is Virgin’s 17th E-190. Qantas has added its 27th Boeing 767, EFR, to the fleet although this aircraft will be operated in a purely freight configuration. QantasLink/ Sunstate has added another Q400 in LQB, while Nauru Air has obtained the ex Dutch Boeing 737 JWL, increasing its fleet to three of the type.

Bizjets are represented by Global Express FMG and Challenger URR, both joining the Avwest fleet, with more Global Expresses to come to cater for the expanding Australian high end charter market.

Local content is provided by two new GippsAero Airvans, AQQ and CQK, bringing Airvan production to over 160 with the type now flying throughout the world, including Mozambique, Alaska, Belize, Costa Rica, Hawaii, Botswana, New Zealand, Canada and PNG. And Kavanagh Balloon production is now close to 450 with an E-260, FSZ, recently delivered to Outback Ballooning in Alice Springs.

Outback Ballooning boasts an all-Kavanagh fleet with 11 balloons ranging in size from the E-120 to the B-400 which can carry up to 22 people.

Outback Ballooning offer a number of scenic flights from the desert around Alice Springs over the MacDonnell Ranges, and is planning to open a Chinese operation in the near future where tourists can view the picturesque limestone mountains and tranquil rivers and lakes in Guilin/Yanshuo Guangxi province.

No fewer than nine new types can be found in this month’s listing, including the much anticipated Cessna 162 Skycatcher and Robinson R66 as well as the Vulcanair A-Viator – all on show at the recent Avalon Airshow.

Much has been written about the Skycatcher and R66, but the A-Viator is a “dark horse” in the twin turbine market.

Designed around the VulcanAir P68 originally built by Partenavia, the A-Viator is far ahead of its predecessor which has been around for almost 40 years. The fuselage has been stretched and now seats nine plus two pilots, and the aircraft is powered by two 328shp (245kW) Rolls‑Royce 250B17C turboprop engines.

The outside fuselage has been streamlined and now, with a retractable undercarriage, the makers claim maximum cruising speed of 213kt, maximum range of 850nm and a service ceiling of 25,000ft.

Also at Avalon were the first Aquila A210, BNE, and Alpi Pioneer 400, LPI, in Australia.

Both aircraft are all-composite, low wing, single engine aircraft powered by 100hp Rotax 912 engines. Maltair is the local agent for the Aquila while Alpine Aircraft Sales imports the Alpi. The Aquila is a German built training and touring aircraft with a cruciform tail and is equipped with two sideby- side seats and a fully glazed cockpit. The Alpi Pioneer is Italian designed and built and is fitted with winglets and a retractable tricycle undercarriage.

There are presently 17Alpi Pioneer 200 and 300 models flying in Australia, while 38 200s and 300s are active in New Zealand.

Miba Holdings’ Ultramagic, NRY, is a Spanish manufactured hot air balloon which can carry up to seven people and has a 145,000 cu ft displacement.

It is 21m high and over 20m in diameter. Ultramagic began designing and building ultralights in 1982, but had previously built and flown a hot air balloon on an 11 month tour of Africa. The company found that there was more interest in their balloon exploits than their ultralights, and so Ultramagic Ultralights became Ultramagic Balloons, with its present output being between 80 and 100 units each year with around 80 per cent of these for export.

Nigel Flynn’s Sproul, XTB, is also a hot air balloon, but unusual as the envelope is in the shape of a tetrahedron – a flat sided, upside down, triangular pyramid.

Keith and Debbie Sproul of North Brunswick, New Jersey, USA, designed the balloon, and although there are several tetrahedron shaped balloons flying in the US, this is the first one in this part of the world.

Qantas Boeing 737 TJZ is back in this country after spending the last two years with Jetconnect in New Zealand. TJZ was the last of 20 Boeing 737-400s delivered to Australia between 1990 and 1996. The first 15 of these went to Australian Airlines with the remaining five of the order going straight to Qantas after the two airlines merged during 1993. Between 2006 and 2009 Qantas moved four 737-400s across the Tasman to Jetconnect, but have now added three brand new 800 series aircraft to the Jetconnect fleet and TJZ is the first of the four original aircraft to be returned to Qantas.

Robinson R22 LTD was damaged at Cheltenham, Victoria, on November 14 2009, but has now been repaired and is back on the register. Air Tractor AT-802 ZED was restored to the register on February 10 after being revoked by CASA the previous day.

Around one third of the aircraft shown in the Deletions section this month have been exported. Hawker 850XP TNX, previously operated by Professional Jet Aviation for the Tinkler Group, is now in the US where it is registered N85NX with Gulfstream Aerospace at Savannah, Georgia.

Air-Link Beech 1900D RUI is now in Canada with West Wind Aviation at Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, and marked as C‑GWWK. Diamond Twin Stars CMF and CNQ are now flying in India after being delivered from the Diamond factory in Canada by Australian Air Ferry. Pitts Special XSC was not imported and remained in the US as N62MH, and Schleicher ASH 31 glider VCW also may not have made it to this country as it has only been on the local register for two month before transferring to the German register. GippsAero Turbo Airvan CQJ has been exported to PNG where it has joined the Missionary Aviation Fellowship fleet alongside three other turbocharged Airvans and one normally aspirated model, as well as six Cessna 206s, three Twin Otters and a single Cessna Caravan and Cessna Skyhawk.

Aerospatiale Dauphins PVA and PVK have been exported to France, although they will not be flying in their new home but will be broken up and used for spare parts. The two Dauphins were brought to Australia from Romania during 1986 and were the mainstay of the Victorian Police Air Wing for many years, providing sterling service catching ‘bad guys’. However, they are now quite old and have been replaced by more modern equipment.

Five aircraft have been deregistered due to accident damage, with the Royal Victorian Aero Club in particular having had a ‘bad trot’ recently with two aircraft, Piper Warrior CGT and Cessna 152 KKW, being written off within four months.

The number of Canadian Home Rotors Baby Bells/ Safaris in Australia has suddenly taken a dive, with NUF exported to Denmark and AQQ withdrawn from use and reduced to spare parts, leaving only six still registered in this country, while nine survive in New Zealand.
