Register Review
We have a relatively small
listing this issue but still a lot of interest with another five new types shown – an amateur built, a light sport aircraft, a glider, a third level airliner and a turbocharged version of an old favourite.
John Holmes’s Jurca MJ-77 Gnatsum, ZYC, is a French de- signed homebuilt three-quarter scale replica of a North Ameri- can P-51 Mustang. Marcel Ju- rca began designing and selling plans for amateur builders in 1956 and while his first efforts, the single seat MJ-2 and MJ-20 were only moderately success- ful, his two-seat development, the MJ-5 Sirocco, proved very popular and hundreds have been built and flown around the world. Since then Jurca has designed several sporting and aerobatic aircraft, but has more recently concentrated on World War 2 fighter replicas. The Jurca ‘air force’ now boasts the MJ-12 Pee 40 (Curtiss P-40), MJ-10 and MJ-100 Spit (Supermarine Spitfire), MJ-9 One-O-Nine (Messerschmitt Bf 109), MJ-8 and MJ-80 1-Nine-O (Focke- Wulf Fw 190) and the MJ-7 (2/3 scale) and MJ-7 Gnatsum (Mustang) series.
The MJ-7 is of wooden con- struction with fabric covering and has a manually operated retractable undercarriage. Sev- eral powerplants can be fitted including the de Havilland Gipsy Major and GM Buick F-58 car engine. The Gnastsum (Mustang backwards) can be built in three variants, the MJ-7 2/3 scale, MJ-77 3/4 scale or the full sized MJ-70.
John’s Gnatsum is the first of its type on the local register with one MJ-5 Sirocco previ- ously registered here. Across the Tasman there have been five MJ-5s and an MJ-8 registered.
Local agent Tecnam Aus- tralia has imported the first P2008, MSF, and if sales of
previous Tecnam products are any indication we can expect to see many more P2008s flying in this part of the world.
register, but is unlikely to be the last.
The Pascale brothers, Luigi and Giovanni, began design- ing aircraft during 1949 when Luigi was working at the Naples University Aeronautical Construction Institute in Italy.
Their first design, the P48 As- tore, was built with the help of four unpaid university students and was powered by an engine built up from spare parts from out-of-use Continental engines.
The aircraft was ready for its first flight in October 1950 but nobody wanted to test fly it.
Eventually Mario de Barnardi took to the air six months later and he was so impressed that he convinced racing pilot Prince Giovanbattista Ca- rafa to use the aircraft in the forthcoming Giro Aereo di Sicilia (round Sicily air race).
The prince was also impressed and commissioned the Pascale brothers to build him a faster aircraft that he could use in air races as well as his frequent trips abroad. The result was the P52 Tigrotto which went on to participate in several European air races during the 1950s with great success.
In keeping with the Pacales’ system of using the design year in the model designation the brothers went on to produce the P55 Tornado, P57 Fachiro, P59 Jolly, P66 Charlie and P68 Victor, which went on to become a very popular design built by Partenavia. Tecnam’s P2008 is the latest design to reach our shores and is unusual as it uses a composite fuselage and vertical tail mated to an aluminium wing and horizontal tail stabiliser. This combination provides smooth fuselage lines along with increased wing and tail strength. Power is provided by a 100hp (75kW) Rotax 912ULS and two 55 litre fuel tanks are located in the wing, giving a 120kt maximum cruise

speed and 690nm range.
The third new type, or more
precisely a new subtype, is the Rockwell Commander 114TC, JHP, that Blanchard Manufacturing has imported from the US. The 114TC was a development of the 114B but fitted with a 270hp (201kW) Lycoming T1O-540-AG1A turbocharged engine. Although the 114 was a very capable and quite popular aircraft, only 45 114TCs were built and JHP is one of the last of these.
The lineage of the Rockwell Commander is quite com- plicated, beginning during 1945 when former Douglas Aircraft project engineer Ted Smith started the Aero Design and Engineering Company (ADEC) to produce twin engine aircraft for the corpo- rate market. ADEC became Aero Commander in 1950 and produced a very popular range of light twins, many of which are still flying to this day.
In 1958 the company became part of the Rockwell organi- sation and was renamed the Aero Commander Division of Rockwell-Standard Corp, but was commonly know as Rockwell Commander. By this time the company was produc- ing upmarket, high perform- ance aircraft with pressurised fuselages and turbocharged or turbine engines. 1960 saw Rockwell Commander move into the business jet market with the 1121 Jet Commander, but when Rockwell-Standard obtained North American in 1967 this aircraft was in direct competition with the parent company’s Sabreliner and so the design and manufactur- ing rights were sold to Israel Aircraft Industries who built it as the Westwind.
In 1981 Rockwell decided to concentrate on military contracts and sold the rights to the Twin Commander models to Gulfstream, which went on to build Commanders until 1985 when it sold the type certificates to Precision Airmo- tive/Twin Commander Aircraft Corporation, which does not build new Commanders but upgrades older models.
The Rockwell Commander
112 and 114 stem from an interest in moving into the light aircraft market during 1968 and the models were designed to compete with the established manufacturers Piper, Beech and Cessna with their Cherokee, Bonanza and Centurion mod- els. The new Rockwell models had a low wing, cruciform tail unit and boasted a wider cabin than its competitors.
When Gulfstream took over the Rockwell models in 1981 it continued to market the 112 and 114, but they were not faring well against the larger manufacturers and eventually the rights were sold to Randall Greene, who set up Com- mander Aircraft to continue to build the type. Commander Aircraft developed the 114B, the 114AT Trainer and the 114TC, but stopped production at the end of 2001 due to the world financial crisis which hit aircraft production harder than most industries.
Bruce Taylor’s Jonker JS-1B Revelation YZT is a new glider built in South Africa by three engineering graduates. Brothers Attie and Uys Jonker and Johan Bosman designed the glider during 1998, and with the help of North West University in Potchefstroom, and a grant from the South African De- partment of Trade and Industry, founded Jonker Sailplanes to manufacture and market the glider. A 10 year gestation period followed in order to test and finalise the design with the first customer delivery in 2008.
The Jonkers had the idea to design a glider around 1985 and studied engineering solely for the purpose of realising their dream. Attie is the chief designer and is also a three time national glider champion.
Uys is managing director and production manager while
Johan is chief aerodynamicist.
All three graduated from the School of Mechanical and Material Engineering at North West University and Attie now lectures there.
The trio hoped to sell 12 gliders per year when they started the business, and with YZT being number 15 they are well on their way to achieving their goal. The JS-1B is an 18m, single seat high performance sailplane designed for competi- tion. The very light weight is achieved using an advanced hybrid composite of carbon fibre, Kevlar and fibreglass, and it’s maximum speed is quoted as 157kt. Wing area is 11. 2m2, max weight 600kg and the aircraft is stressed to +6/-4G.
The fifth new type shown is the PA-31-350 T1020 SGG which DHM Aircraft Sales has imported for resale. The T1020 owes its heritage to the PA-31 which was designed after Bill Piper suggested a cabin class business twin where the aft fuselage did not start tapering until behind the cabin. It was originally named the Inca, but when it was released during 1967 its name became Navajo.
Over 1830 Navajo 300s, 310s and 325s were built before the Navajo Chieftain was intro- duced during 1962 fitted with two 350hp (260kW) Lycom- ing engines. The lengthened fuselage and strengthened floor allowed room for 10 seats which put it into direct com- petition with the Cessna 402 and Beech 99 in the third level airline market which it began to dominate during the 1960s and 70s. The name ‘Navajo’ was dropped during 1980 and the PA-31 Chieftain remained in production until 1985 when 1825 had been completed – only a few less than the original PA-31 Navajo.
The success of the Navajo and Chieftain range encour- aged Piper to produce a true airliner, so during September 1981 it set up an airline divi- sion which would sell the new T1020 direct to third level airlines rather than through its normal distributors. The T1020 was basically a Chieftain with beefed up undercarriage, revised interior and lighter seats to al- low 11 seats to be fitted.
During 1982 a T1020 embarked on a sales tour of Australia, but no sales were forthcoming and the aircraft returned to the US without coming onto the local regis- ter. The lack of interest in the type in Australia was reflected worldwide and only 17 T1020s were built during 1982, seven in 1983, four during 1984 and two the following year for a total of 30 before production ceased.
SGG is the last of its type built being the second aircraft from the 1984 production.
Twenty-one aircraft are listing in the Deletions section this month with the usual cross-section of reregistrations, exports and accidents. RFDS Super King Air AMS has changed to MWV, no doubt to enable a newer RFDS aircraft to take up AMS in the future, and Cirrus SR22-G3 OPG has become OPX to allow Packm of Benowa, Queensland, to use OPG on its brand new Cirrus SR22T Turbo. Interest- ingly, both aircraft were spotted recently at Archerfield carrying the same marking while the changeover took place.
GippsAero Airvan CNQ has gone to France where it is now registered F-GTNM, while the new French mark- ing for BGM, shown in last issue’s listing, has now been revealed as F-GOGR.
Swearingen Metro III EET has been “withdrawn from use”, although it will probably follow its stablemate EEU to the US where it has become N619BA. Also now registered in America is Qantas Boeing 767 OGD after storage at Vic- torville since September 2009.
The 767 joins OGA and OGC with Cargo Aircraft Manage- ment and will go to Israel for conversion to a freighter. n
HIGH WING Tecnam P2008 MSF has become the first of type on the Australian register, but is unlikely to be the last.
