Cirrus SR22T Turbo, CPK, is one of two new types to be found in the New Allocations listing this issue. Previous turbocharged Cirrus models have used a normally aspirated Continental TSIO-550-N engine converted by Tornado Alley Turbo to turbo power, but the new model is fitted with a 315hp (235kW) TSIO-550-K factory turbocharged powerplant.

The change means that the engine now has a full factory warranty. The turbocharged version has a 1300ft/min climb rate with a maximum operating altitude of 25,000ft. The SR22T also has a revised nose cowling to accommodate a redesigned oleo strut nose wheel and is fitted with the Cirrus Airframe Parachute System, as all Cirrus aircraft are. At least one more SR22T is known to be in Australia ready for delivery.

Four more new Cirruses are also shown in the listing, two G2s and two G3s, reflecting the strength of Cirrus aircraft sales at the moment. The company reported an increase in deliveries during the first half of 2010 from 121 to 127 compared with the same period last year, an increase of around five per cent compared with a decline of around 10 per cent for the overall industry.

The second new type listed is Wayne Tomkins’ Osprey GP-4, appropriately registered XGP. Designed by George Pereira, the prototype first flew in April 1984 and at the EAA convention at Oshkosh the same year won the Grand Champion Custom Built and the Outstanding New Design awards. This was the first and only time that the same aircraft had won both awards during the same year. The GP-4 is a two-seat, single engine, sport/ cruising aircraft built from plans with mostly wood and foam construction. The solid one piece wing spar enables the aircraft to be stressed to +8g / -6g and the aircraft is designed to accept either a manual or hydraulic retractable undercarriage.

Wayne’s GP-4 is fitted with a 200hp (150kW)Lycoming IO-360 engine and hydraulic undercarriage and is all-over bright red. He has been working on the aircraft for around 12 years and although it is not ready for its first flight yet it is hoped that it will take to the air early next year.

David Robinson’s Giles G-202 YOB is the third of its type on the local register and the type in which Red Bull Air Race competitor Australian Matt Hall does most of his airshow aerobatics. The G-202 is based on the G-200 single seat aerobatic aircraft designed by Richard Giles and the aircraft was available in kit form from Akrotech Aviation of Troutdale, Oregon. Akrotech suspended operations during August 2000, although parts and support are still available through Dent Air of Annapolis, Maryland. The G-202 is an all composite, tandem seat, single engine, low wing, fully aerobatic aircraft fitted with a tailwheel and stressed to +/-10G. David’s G-202 was built by Alexander Mary in Oakland, California, during 1997 and is fitted with a 180hp (135kW) Lycoming IO‑360 powerplant – although engines of up to 235hp (175kW) can be fitted to the type.

TQT is a Canadian Home Rotors Safari which Thomas Talbot has imported from New Zealand where it was built by PA Slape of Blenheim during 2007. The Safari has an interesting history dating back to 1953 when Harold ‘Pop’ Emigh and his son designed and built a single seat helicopter with the plans later made available to amateur builders. ‘Pop’ went on to design a two-seat version using a 150hp (110kW) Lycoming engine which was produced by International Helicopters of Mayville, New York, which called it the Commuter II.

The manufacturing rights were obtained by Murray Sweet during 1979 and Canadian Home Rotors was set up to market the type. Murray continued to develop the helicopter, and as the shape looked similar to a smaller version of the Bell 47G it was given the name Baby Belle. Bell Helicopter objected to the name so it was changed to ‘Safari’ during 1992, and to date there have been 14 Baby Belle/Safaris seen on the Australian register and 10 on the New Zealand register. Nine are still active in New Zealand with TQT becoming the eighth in Australia.

The Safari frame is made of welded steel tube, the cockpit ‘bubble’ of perspex and a 160hp (120kW) or 180hp (135kW) Lycoming engine is the preferred powerplant. The kit consists of the airframe, engine, gearbox, cockpit, main and tail rotors and rotor hubs, and the home builder’s input is mainly assembling these components.

The drive train is fully geared and does not use any belts or chains, making a very solid and reliable system.

Three aircraft are Returning to the Register with the first two, JetRanger BPB and Bonanza OZD, only very recently revoked by CASA. VulcanAir P68R VRI is the only one of its type on the local register and it was first registered during February 2009. However, it was not delivered and cancelled 12 months later. It was allocated an American registration, N168VR, but this was not taken up and the aircraft remained stored at VulcanAir’s manufacturing plant at Napoli, Italy. The aircraft is now back on the register and is on its way to the local distributors Airitalia (Aust), the agents for the type in Australia, New Zealand and PNG.

The VulcanAir P68R is a six-seater fitted with a retractable undercarriage, full IFR flying as OE-IAL and OE‑IEJ respectively, and Cameron Balloon FGP in the shape of a racing car is in Belgium with L Cant at Vrasens and marked as OO-BRF. In Denmark, Rolladen-Schneider LS6 glider XWS was easily changed to OY-XWS and is with M Leth at Verde.

Across the English Channel the two ex RAAF HS. 748 navigation trainers, AMQ and AHL, that have been in storage at Southend for a number of years, have been stripped of useful parts. The remaining fuselages, including the wings, have been moved by heavy crane over the boundary fence from the airport to the adjoining Skylark Hotel with plans to renovate and preserve the two aircraft as an attraction.

Piper Super Cub JVL, which spent almost four years in Australia between May 2005 and January 2009, was originally delivered to the French controlled Congo as F-OBKU and became TN‑ABK when the Congo received its own registration prefix. From there it went to Gabon then South Africa before coming to Australia.

On export to the UK it became G-CFSV, but was recently advertised for sale in Italy with a US registration. To add to its colourful history since it was built in 1957 it has now been sold in Morocco where it is now CN-TDO.

Our trip will continue across the Atlantic to Canada and down through the US to South America in next month’s issue. n glass cockpit, and is powered by two 200hp (150kW) Lycoming IO‑360 fuel injected engines. It is a development of the Partenavia P68, of which 73 have come to this part of the world with 43 still flying in Australia, eight in New Zealand and a single example in Fiji.

More than half of the 29 Deletions shown have been reregistered or transferred to the RA-Aus register and therefore are still flying in Australia, with a further five aircraft revoked by CASA and expected back in the air shortly. Two of these are already back on the register and are noted in the previous paragraph. Five aircraft have been exported, with BGM being the first GippsAero Airvan TC 320 to go to France – although three normally aspirated examples are already flying there. Qantas Boeing 767 OGC has been in storage at Victorville, USA, since February but has now joined OGA with Cargo Aircraft Management at Orlando, Florida, and is being prepared for its ferry flight to Tel Aviv where it will be converted to a freighter.

Bede BD-5B NZG was stolen and crashed at Northam, Western Australia, during May 2007 but has only just been cancelled, and Cessna 150G YGJ was severely damaged in a storm at Townsville earlier this year with the wreck being noted in a hangar there last month.

A quick trip around the world in search of Australian aircraft that have not been reported in this column before finds us first in PNG where Robinson R44 Raven JSW is now flying as P2-MTS with Malaysian Foundation at Madang, and Kawasaki BK117B JGO is operating with Pacific Rim Air Services at Port Moresby as P2-PRA.

In Asia, Agusta A109S MHD is now with Helitrend in Manila flying as RP‑C7771, Beech 400 EXB is now HS‑ASC with Bangkok Aviation Centre at Don Muang, and Diamond Twin Star AHX is with the National Flying Training Institute at Gondia, India, marked as VT-NFM.

In Korea, Metro 23 HAN is now HL5237 with East Asia Airlines at Yangwang, while Sikorsky S-76C BKS in flying with Heli Korea as HL9489. In Singapore the five, previously Jandakot based, Singapore Flying College Cessna 172s BZI, BZJ, BZM, BZV and BZX are flying as 9V-FCG, 9V-FCH, 9V-SCI, 9V-SCJ and 9V-SCK.

Across to Israel and Hughes 500D HWD is now 4X-BJQ, and the much travelled Short SD3-60 MJH is with Ayeet Aviation and Tourism at Beer- Sheba flying as 4X-AVP. The SD3-60 started life in the UK, spent nine years with Hazelton Air Services before returning to the UK during 1998, then went to the Seychelles before recently going to Israel.

A quick diversion to Nigeria finds Twin Otter VHM now working with Caverton Helicopters as 5N-BLJ.
