Qantas will launch its Next Generation Check-in at Perth Airport next week, with the airline revealing that it has worked with renowned designed Marc Newson to provide creative direction for the various components involved.
“Next Generation Check-in has been designed to deliver an enhanced check-in experience for our customers – providing greater speed and ease through the airport terminal by eliminating airport queuing,” said Qantas’s executive manager customer experience Alison Webster.
“With this in mind, careful consideration has been given to the functionality, aesthetics, and ease of use for both our customers and airport employees.”
The Next Generation Check-in will allow passengers who are travelling domestically from Perth to complete their check-in and bag drop much faster utilising a new Frequent Flyer card with an intelligent smart chip which turns it into a permanent boarding card. Similarly, status Frequent Flyer members will receive new ‘Q Bag Tags’ which feature radio frequency identification (RFID) chips which will act as a permanent bag tag, and will be introduced later this year.
The new check in system will be trialled from next week at Perth Airport, while construction and training will continue in Sydney ahead of its launch there later this year. This will be followed by rollouts in Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Canberra in 2011. The program is scheduled for completion in the second half of 2011.
