• The 5hr 5min maiden flight of the first Boeing 767-400ER, N76400, took place from Seat-tle on October 9 flown by Cap-tain Buzz Nelson, 767 program chief pilot, and Captain John Cashman, flightcrew operations director. Boeing launched the 767-400, with a two class 304 passenger capacity, in March 1997 with a 21 aircraft order from Delta Air Lines. Sales now stand at 54.

• On October 7 German Daim-lerChrysler subsidiary DASA and French partner Sogerma announced a program to convert Airbus A310-300s into freighters. All major express package companies have shown interest in the conversion, although no orders are expected at this stage.
