Only one new type appears in the New Allocations listing this issue, Adam Kane’s Piel CP605 Super Diamant FXA.

Claude Piel was one of the most prolific designers of light aircraft in France during the 1950s and ’60s, and although his designs were primarily for amateur builders many were produced as factory built aircraft by French manufacturers that he worked for.

Born in Paris in January 1921, Piel built his first aircraft, the CP10, during 1943. The CP10 was an adaption of Henri Mignet’s Pou-du-Ciel (Flying Flea) and unfortunately, like most of the Pou-du- Ciels built, it crashed during 1949, almost taking Piel’s life in the process. His next design, the CP20, was based on a scaled down Spitfire – a much more stable platform on which to base a homebuilt aircraft – while his third design, the CP30 Emeraude, was the first of a long line of successful variants still being produced to this day, 27 years after Piel’s death.

There have been about 70 different Piel designs, most based around the Emeraude with small improvements and different engines and literally hundreds of personal modifications by amateur builders.

While all of Piel’s designs have been available as plans, the Emeraude has been commercially built by Coopavia, Sociate des Aeronautiques de Nord (SCANOR), Rousseau Avions, Scinex and Cooperatives des Ateliers Aeronautiques de la Region Parisienne (CAARP).

Kane’s FXA can trace its lineage back to the original CP30 Emeraude which first flew on June 19 1954. It was a sideby- side two-seater with a fixed canopy, small forward hinged doors and a 65hp (48kW) Continental engine. This was developed into the CP301 which featured a sliding cockpit canopy and was powered by a 90hp (67kW) Continental.

There were many variants of the CP301, and the next step on the road to the CP605 was the CP60 Diamant (Diamond) which had a longer and wider cabin with seats for three and was fitted with a later model 90hp (67kW) Continental engine. Again there have been several variants of the CP60, including the CP603 with a retractable tricycle undercarriage and 115hp (86kW) Lycoming, but the CP605 is a basic three seat CP60 with a swept tail and a 150hp (110kW) Lycoming O‑320.

Two aircraft can be found in the Aircraft Returning to Register listing with Bell JetRanger JRI back after being revoked by CASA 15 days earlier, and Bandeirante LNB which has the dubious honour of being found in three of the four sections in this issue. The aircraft changed operators to DBF Aviation on July 21, was cancelled on sale to Guatemala on August 4, and was restored to the register on the same day. It is believed to be a paperwork problem that has prevented the export so the Bandit will likely appear again in next issue’s deletions.

Of the 20 aircraft listed in the Deletions section this month almost one third have been cancelled due to accident damage or being destroyed, including Richard Walters’s 1966 Model Cessna 172G, LFI, which was damaged by high winds at Gayndah, Queensland, during October 2007. Richard has owned LFI since 1989 and as a replacement has recently purchased KGB, a 1967 Model Cessna 172H. He has now cancelled the old markings and reregistered KGB to the ‘new’ LFI as shown in the New Allocations section.

Six aircraft are shown as exported with Cessna 510 Mustang SJP now in New Zealand with NZ Jet Charters of North Shore Airfield, Auckland marked as ZK-PGA, and Thunder hot air balloon KWT now flying in the UK as G-CGDP with The Ballooning Business at Alcester. Elderly Piper Tomahawk MHA has been withdrawn from use and scrapped, with the stripped fuselage recently noted at Caloundra Airport, Queensland.

In the Change of Owner section this issue all 13 helicopters previously operated by Albatross Helicopters are listed under their new owner North Australian Helicopters. Mark Grosvenor formed Albatross Helicopters in 1996 at Noonamah, NT, with one Robinson R22. Specialising in mustering, the company quickly grew until the fleet reached seven R22s, four R44s, a Bell JetRanger and a LongRanger. Services offered include charter, scenic tours, aerial photography, mineral exploration and survey and aerial burning from Noonamah and subsidiary bases at Jabiru, Jindare and Ban Ban Stations, and at the boundary of Litchfield National Park.

North Australian Helicopters was established in 1993 by Milton Jones, and in 1998 took over the operations of Heli-North which included a contract with Parks Australia North. DuringDecember 2001 North Australian Helicopters purchased the AA Company Helicopter Division at Mount Isa, which added five Robinson R22s to its fleet as well as a fully equipped hangar and office at Mount Isa airport. With the acquisition of Albatross Helicopters the North Australian Helicopters fleet now numbers 43, including three fixed wing aircraft, and is one of the largest helicopter operators in Australia. Operating from Jabiru and the Katherine Gorge, the company is heavily involved with Kakadu National Park tours and local government contracts.

CareFlight (Qld) has added Learjet 45 CXJ to its fleet which now comprises two Lears, two Bell 412s, a Bell 230 and an Aerospatiale Squirrel.

The entire fleet of Orange Air has been transferred to Michael Robertson at Dubbo, the aircraft involved being Partenavia FAZ, Cessna 310 FYW, Cherokee Warrior MUB and Beech King Air NSN.

Following up on three aircraft that appeared in the deletions section of the August 2009 issue – Cessna Citation YXY is now known to be flying in the US as N28SP with Echo Aviation at Wilmington, Delaware, and the two Rex Saab 340s sold to Sprint Air, Poland, ZLY and ZRX, have now become SP-KTK and SP-KTL respectively.

Meanwhile Cessna TU206G Stationair EFT, which was exported to America way back in July 1999, is now flying in Chile as CC-PXB with J Zelada Martinez.

Good news from the UK is that DH. 80A Puss Moth UON is under rebuild by Aero Antiques at Durley. The Puss Moth was assembled at Mascot and made its first flight on August 13 1930 when Major Hereward de Havilland flew it to Essendon.

It was cancelled on November 14 1934 because of disapproval by the authorities of a proposed flight across the Tasman Sea by owner Raymond Whitehead.

Whitehead went ahead with the flight anyway and, along with copilot Rex Nicholl, took off from Gerringong Beach, Sydney, and landed at Doubtless Bay, Northland, after 14hr 40min flying. The pair were promptly arrested on arrival and the aircraft remained in New Zealand, becoming ZKADU.

The aircraft was later used as a source of spares for two other Puss Moth rebuilds with the remains stored at Invercargill for some years. After several partial rebuilds in New Zealand the aircraft is now back in the UK, owned by Roy Palmer and being restored complete with an ‘as new’ Gypsy III engine.
