QinetiQ and BAE Systems have teamed up to offer a solution for the ADF’s long held JP66 Phase 1 air defence target system requirement.
The teaming says its “partnership will deliver flexibility and a depth of capability to provide the full extent of the defence requirement from helicopter simulations, through towed targets that can produce a variety of signatures, to high velocity, highly manoeuvrable unmanned aerial targets.” No specific airframes or target types have been publicly identified as part of the proposed solution.

The JP66 contract will see three types of targets owned, maintained and operated by the successful bidder under the contract and operated at various ranges around Australia. The project received first pass approval earlier this year and is due to go to second pass consideration in 2010. Service entry is expected in 2012.
