A classic Italian
The Fly Synthesis Texan Top Class
Fly Synthesis is an Italian company making a variety of lightplanes. The Texan is their low-wing, two-seat LSA contender. Like all the other Fly Synthesis products, their Texan is built almost entirely of carbon fibre composite, with Nomex sandwiched, carbon fibre skinned wings, fin, tailplane and flying control surfaces, making it very rigid while being extremely light, at just 305 kilogrammes. I’ve known heavier single-seaters!
The Texan is also strong, being stressed to +4 and –2g, but having been tested to destruction at +9 and –4.5g. The only airframe components that are not made from carbon are the wing tips, which are Kevlar mouldings, and slightly flexible to minimise damage in the event of ‘hangar rash’. Nevertheless, they can be replaced quickly and easily should they actually get broken.
