FIRST FLEET Mal Shipton’s extremely rare Fleet FLF biplane at the Watts Bridge Festival for Flight. (Craig Murray)

Airliners and helicopters figure prominently in the New Allocations this issue, but by far the most interesting aircraft listed is Mal Shipton’s Fleet FLF.

This 1920s biplane arrived at Redcliffe, Queensland, from the US during April along with another ‘classic’, Waco YKS-6 YKX, noted in last issue’s listing.

The two aircraft now share the same hangar as the Shipton family’s other aircraft, DH Gipsy Moth ULP and Cessna 195 BVD.

Reuben Fleet formed Fleet Aircraft during 1928 to manufacture the Consolidated Aircraft Husky Junior which Consolidated had decided to drop in favour of larger military types. The Husky Junior was a two-seat training biplane which Fleet named the Fleet I when fitted with a 110hp (82kW) Warner Scarab engine and Fleet II when the 100hp (75kW) Kinner powerplant was installed. Additionally, the Fleet PT-6 was developed as a military trainer version of the Fleet II.

Very few Fleet I and IIs were produced and the type has become very rare.

Consolidated Aircraft acquired Fleet Aircraft in 1930, and in doing so bought back the rights to the Fleet I and II originally designed by Consolidated.

A separate company was set up in Canada to produce the Fleet 7 Fawn and 16 Finch for the Royal Canadian Air Force and later develop the Fleet 80 Canuk powered by an 85hp (63kW) Continental engine.

Unfortunately the timing was bad as the war had just ended and the aircraft market was flooded with cheap ex military machines. Although around 200 Canuks were produced, Fleet (Canada) closed its doors during 1947.

Mal’s Fleet is the first of its type in Australia and the only other Fleet in this part of the world is Graham Orphan’s Fleet 16-B ZK-AGC in New Zealand. Interestingly, the recent Watts Bridge Festival of Flight was the first public outing for FLF where Graham Orphan was seen checking out the new arrival.

LIFEFLIGHT Kawasaki BK 117 EMS, previously registered BKL (pictured) and used by the then Lifeflight in Victoria as a
critical care air ambulance for children, has now returned across the Tasman. (Edward Chisholm)

Inexpensive surplus North American Mustangs are a thing of the distant past and only a privileged few can afford to own, maintain and operate the small number of surviving genuine Mustangs left. An alternative is a composite scale replica such as the FEW (Fighter Escort Wing) P-51 Mustang.

WIK is Jim Wickham’s second FEW Mustang and only the third of its type to fly in Australia – the other one being Len Dyson’s LSD. The original FEW Mustang was designed by American Jim Kern, but unfortunately he died in a T-6 Harvard crash some years ago and Legendary Aircraft of Santa Paula, California, is now supplying P-51 kits.

Task Research of Ardmore, Oklahoma, built all the composite parts for FEW Mustangs and continue to supply these parts for Legendary kits with Legendary producing all the non composite parts. Legendary has also developed a new propeller speed reduction unit (PSRU) and also can now supply a complete “firewall forward” kit. The kit comprises a Chevrolet seven litre Gen IV or 6. 6 litre Gen III fuel injected, all-aluminium V8 engine mated to the PSRU and propeller and includes the exhaust, alternator and propeller governor. The package is dyno tested and ready for installation into the completed airframe, reducing build time by as much as half.

Performance of a FEW Mustang, fitted with the larger Chevrolet engine option, is a claimed 470hp (350kW) giving a 225mph (195kt) cruise speed with maximum 340mph (295kt).

Legendary Aircraft is now working on other V8 powered WW2 scale replicas with even radial engined types a possibility.

WIK was imported around 15 years ago along with Jim Wickham’s first Mustang kit, but as Jim worked on his aircraft it became obvious that the owner of the second kit was not going to complete it. It was put into storage for some years before Jim and its original owner came to a financial agreement and Jim ended up with two identical aircraft – one FIRST FLEET Mal Shipton’s extremely rare Fleet FLF biplane at the Watts Bridge Festival for Flight. (Craig Murray) Concept Aviation Supplies Bankstown Airport Online Shopping at: www. conceptaviation. com. au Ph: (complete and flying and the other far from it.

Five years have now passed and WIK recently took to the air powered by a Chevrolet 5. 7 litre engine. The only two differences between the Mustangs are the colour schemes and MRS has a computer controlled fuel injection system whilst WIK has a manual set up.

Jim decided that as MRS has a basic USAF ‘Bald Eagle’ scheme, WIK would be something completely different – and different it certainly is.

Named Merlin, the Mustang has a magician air brushed on the nose and an owl on the tail making the aircraft look absolutely magnificent.

Two Aircraft Returning to the Register this month, Cessna 150 EYT and Cessna 182 PSO, were revoked by CASA during 2006 and both appear with new owners. The Cessna 150 resided at Mullalay, NSW, prior to de-registration but is now based at Gunnedah, while the Cessna 182 was hangared at Port Augusta and is now on a property near Broken Hill.

Twenty-five aircraft are listed as Deletions this issue and whereas in the past reregistrations have dominated this section, almost as many have been de-registered due to accidents as have been re-registered.

Of those accidents, where the location is known all are in Queensland, and unfortunately that trend continued in recent months with four fatalities in two separate accidents during one weekend in September.

Only four exports are noted, with Kawasaki BK 117 EMS and Aerospatiale Squirrel RLO moving to New Zealand, and Twin Otter RPZ and Socata TBM700 XTB going to France.

The departure of XTB leaves four TBM700s flying in Australia – along with two of the later model TBM850s. The TBM700 began life as a joint venture between Aerospatiale (now part of EADS Socata) and Mooney and featured a 700shp (522kW) Pratt & Whitney PT6A turboprop engine driving a Hartzell four bladed propeller. Mooney withdrew from the project during 1991 and Aerospatiale went on to develop the TBM700B, which was fitted with an additional cockpit entry hatch and a large cargo door, and the TBM700C which has a higher gross weight.

Australian Aerospace imported XTB, an early production TBM700B from Malaysia only last year, but it is now returning to its birthplace.

Kawasaki BK 117 EMS is a fully equipped emergency medical helicopter previously used by Lifeflight in Victoria as the Powercor Children’s Helicopter.

It came to Australia from New Zealand during January 2000 and has now returned across the Tasman, no doubt to continue the good work. New Zealand has one of the highest number of aircraft per capita in the world, and helicopters make up a large portion of the local aircraft register.

The Catalina Flying Memorial’s Consolidated Catalina CAT will be temporarily registered in the US for its ferry flight from Portugal to Australia, and let’s hope that a recent bid to raise funds for two reconditioned engines to power the ‘Cat’ have been successful. (For more detail, see Warbirds this issue. ) Eight aircraft are listed as re-registered for various reasons, including Pilatus PC-12 PIU which has changed to PID to better reflect its new owner Pinnacle Drilling of Orange, NSW.

The PC-12 was first registered PIL during November 1998 and operated as the Pilatus demonstrator for some time before becoming PIU in May this year to enable a brand new PC-12/47E to use PIL. Now, for the second time in three months, its markings have been changed again.

Following up on some recently exported aircraft, the second batch of Helicopter Aerial Surveys’s Hughes 500s to go to the Philippines, THZ, THQ, BSQ and THG, are now flying as RPC-3577, RP-C3578, RPC-3579 and RPC-3580 respectively – all with Venjo Training Services at Manila, as are the first batch. A further two Hughes 500s, MBM and MHQ, are shown in the deletions section of this issue as being ‘withdrawn from use’, but it will be no surprise to find these two aircraft have in fact followed the first two batches to the Philippines. Three Kawasaki/ Hughes 500s remain on the Helicopter Aerial Surveys’s Australian inventory, including RMS noted in the Changes of Owner this issue.

Going further back in time, Qantas Boeing 747 EBM, which has seen service in America, Afghanistan and Armenia since leaving Australia in 1991, is now resident in Djibouti where it flies as J2-LBD.

Boeing 737 JNE is now with Seagle Air of Bratislava, Slovakia, and operates as OM-HLC.

The 737 was owned by Ansett Worldwide Aviation Services whilst in Australia between December 2001 and October 2002, and was then used in New Zealand for three years as ZK‑JNE before export to the UK as G-STRJ.

Bristow Helicopters’s Aerospatiale Super Puma BHV has now returned to the UK after service in Nigeria as 5N-BGO, and Northern Territory Air Services Twin Otter NTO is now flying in Canada, marked as C-FCPV, with BBS Aircraft of Saskatoon.

Finally, Nomad WFF has recently moved to Germany where it is in use by Usedomer Flug of Peenemunde as D‑IUFG.

The Nomad was built as an N24 but, after de-registration during 1985, was returned to flying status as an N24A and sold to EC Menzies in 1992 who flew it in New Zealand as ZK-ECN. The aircraft then went to Suriname as PZ-TBM before it’s latest move to Germany.
